Wool, Felt & Flannel Kits

Wool felt applique is unique in that the shapes won’t fray, so it’s great for beginners. We have a few wonderful felt applique kits for beginners for you to choose from. All you have to do is cut out your desired shapes, glue baste, pin, or even staple them onto the fabric, and stitch around the edge with a blanket stitch. This type of stitch is perfect for felt applique designs because you can see the thread, which is the point. It creates a design with little stitches that point inward, emphasizing the handmade look of felt applique kits.

To create a blanket stitch for felt embroidery kits, thread your needle, tie a knot at the end, and insert it right at the edge of your applique shape up from underneath your fabric. Perle cotton thread is great for quilting with wool felt. Then, stitch about ¼” into your fabric shape. As you come back up, push your needle through right about where you first started and start pulling your thread taut. Before it is completely taut, slip your needle back underneath your thread. 

Once again, work back into your felt shape about ¼” in from the edge. As you go to tighten your thread, slip the needle back underneath again. You’ll start to see a line of thread being formed along the edge. The stitches you take should all point toward the middle of your felt shape and be about the same length. Continue until you have completely stitched down your wool felt shape and secure your thread underneath with a knot.
